| Big girl panties are on! |

| | happy | ] | I just booked my flight and reserved a car for the trip to Florida with my sister. I know this isn't a big deal to anyone else but its the first time I'm doing this on my own. I also had a really good therapy session today. No tears for once, in fact just the opposite. Jon reminded me about my old friend Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. I'm sitting on top of the pyramid. |

| Socks finished! |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|01:30 am] |
I stayed up and did the last 17 rows of the second Purple Bamboo Sock. I cast on for a new pair, but I'm too tired to do more tonight. By the way, the crafting gloves help a LOT. I couldn't have knit so much without them. |

| Washcloths for Mom |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|11:24 pm] |
I knitted all three of them today. Here are pictures. They'll be more square after they're washed. ( Pictures )
Both yarns are Sugar n' Cream. It actually doesn't matter if I wash them, as they're going to spend their lives rolled up in a decorative basket in Mom's kitchen. As long as they look good rolled up it'll be fine.
Now I've got to finish my purple bamboo socks. I'll finish them tomorrow and then start on another pair. I need new socks for hiking around campus. Most of my current ones have holes in them. |

| Redzils' 2009 Resolutions - final report |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|11:40 am] |
- Get a Ph.D. (mind): yes. I even enjoyed my defense meeting (January 27). My official graduation was May 15, 2009. It makes me happy that, no matter what happens, I will always be Doktor Redzils, Ph.D.
- Run a half-marathon (body): yes. I ran two half marathons in Anchorage this summer. The first was late June, the second early August. I ran the second eleven minutes faster than the first. And then, September 20th, I ran a whole marathon in just under six hours.
- Savor the joy (soul): I remembered this, sometimes. It's harder for me to track and measure this sort of goal, but I still believe it's an important thing to work on.
- Donate at least $10 a month to an organization that does good (world): in 2009 I donated $330 to organizations whose work I support, and invested $100 through Kiva's microlending program. The non-for-profits I supported were: National Public Radio, American Public Media, the March of Dimes (I was a sponsor for my friend Anna's walk in memory of a lost child), Doctors Without Borders, the YMCA at Virginia Tech, the Gorilla Foundation, Beans Café (which serves hungry and homeless people in Anchorage), the Salvation Army, Kiva's Operating Costs, the US fund for UNICEF, and the Second Chance League, a Fairbanks based sled dog rescue raising money to feed dogs in Fort Yukon, Alaska where a poor salmon harvest wrecked the food economy. |

| Yesterdays bowl and todays bowl |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|10:22 am] |
I spent a lovely day yesterday with lissa510 and berrick_grvsn . We had lunch and then went to see the new Sherlock movie. In between lunch and the movie we stopped at a shop called Doggy Style which, you guessed it, is a store for dogs but they a good selection of cat toys too. I bought a couple of toys for Dr. Schrodinger. One of them is a "fishing pole" type. He liked it so much that when I stopped playing with him he promptly dragged it over to his kibble bowl.

This mornings bowl had a gathering of some of his favorite mousies.

So its safe to say that Dr. Schrodinger has settled in nicely into his new diggs.

| Making the banal beautiful |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|06:57 pm] |
Something occurred to me while I was doing laundry and hanging up ugly hand towels in the kitchen and bathrooms -- why not make some better-looking ones? Definitely something worth doing. They knit up quick with worsted-weight cotton yarn. I'm going to try out KnitPicks Comfy Worsted or Shine Worsted. They're inexpensive -- less than $2.50 a skein -- and come in many colors. I'll have to research both on Ravelry to see which is better.
At Joanns this evening I got blue and yellow Sugar n' Cream to make washcloths for Mom's kitchen basket. SnC now comes in larger balls, and Mom wants smaller washcloths than the ones I made for my mother-in-law. So two skeins -- one of each color -- should net me four cloths. Rock. I told her about the designs on the Hanks soap I got, and she'd rather me leave them plain than knit sweaters for them. (One's a sheep, one's a gingerbread man, and one's oval with a raised skein of yarn and knitting needles on it.) So plain soap and three or four washcloths. She's got the basket she wants to use already. So I don't even have to buy that. The soap was purchased with a gift certificate. So the only cost to me is the $4.20 for the yarn. Yay for inexpensive presents!
Oh, remember the red soap sweater I made Mom? I used Patons Classic Wool in red. Mom reports that the dye runs. A lot. She had to bleach her tub. Eek. Won't be using that brand again.
Speaking of soap sweaters, I just remembered that I have some KnitPicks Wool of the Andes I can use for sweaters for me. I have the soap already. Good, I won't have to buy more yarn.
So those plus socks are my knitting plans for the next few weeks. If I feel like it I'll pick up the lace shawl I was working on last winter, but I make no promises. :) |

I only have one pattern repeat of 30 rows to do for my afghan, plus a six-row garter stitch edging. So it should be done by tomorrow night. Rock. |

| I fell down happy at Twist |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|05:14 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | excited | ] | My Christmas day was very quiet. I spent quite a lot of it alseep, recovering from having moved two book cases and my bed the day before. As I said in my last post, I'm very happy with the new arrangement. But there was a need for the heavy duty drugs. I was feeling well rested and rather restless this morning. I can't seem to find my double pointed needle box or the box of sock yarn so I decided to give myself a little present by going up to Twist in New Hope.

I got my needles and some sock yarn (Misty Alpaca and some Berroco with sparkles) and then proceeded to fall down hard in the fiber area. Some BFL and a small tuft of cashmere/silk just grabbed a hold of me and wouldn't let go. The cashmere/silk will become a cowl to wear during my trip to Mongolia. I need some mittens for that trip to. I found some patterns and a few copies of Wild Fibers to complete the purchase. Happy Birthday to me!
As I mentioned I'm hoping to take a trip to Mongolia in Late May early June. I still need to see my Rheumatologist to get her O.K. for the various shots I'll need. My counselor agrees that I need to start setting some goals. He likes the idea that I'm going to do a bit adventuring before I settle down and work on getting into grad school. Getting ready for the trip will be fun (at least that's what I keep telling myself). It will involve a lot of walking. I need to do a bit of research on how high above sea level I can get for a day hike in the area. A day hike won't get me acclimatized but it should be fun.
ETA: If your wondering why Mongolia. There are a whole lot of reasons that have to do with education and culture but in the end its about as far away from my everyday life as I can get. |

Merry Xmas everyone!!!!!
this has been a hard year, but at the same time we have been so very blessed; with opportunities and friendships and sustenance...friends and family around us make all the difference. and being a bit strapped for cash has made the love and labors of love stand out.
God bless you all. wherever you are, whatever your beliefs. |
